Liberia – History, Culture, National Identity and the Significance of its Gold Coins

Liberia lies on the West African Atlantic coast and borders Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Ivory Coast. The country’s name derives from the Latin ” liber ,” meaning roughly “land of the free.” Liberia originated in the 19th century as a refuge for former African American slaves, making it a unique case both historically and politically on the African continent.

The capital city Monrovia is named in honor of US President James Monroe. Today, the metropolitan region has several million inhabitants and is the economic, political and cultural center of the country. English is the official language, but numerous regional languages are also spoken. The flag of Liberia deliberately resembles the US flag – with a white star and eleven stripes – and symbolizes the historical roots of the state.

Politics, society and economic structures

Liberia has a turbulent history and has produced several influential heads of state. Particularly well-known are:

  • William VS Tubman (President 1944–1971) – the country’s longest-serving president, initiator of economic liberalization and modernization. His portrait appears on important gold coins of the 1960s.

  • Ellen Johnson Sirleaf – first female president of an African state.

  • George Weah – former World Footballer of the Year and President of the State since 2018.

The economy is based primarily on agriculture and forestry, fishing, precious metals and raw materials . Crops grown include rice, cassava, coffee, sugar cane, palm oil and cocoa. Gold and diamonds are partly extracted industrially and partly in small-scale mining structures and still play an important role in exports.

Liberia boasts diverse vegetation, including tropical forests, mahogany and ironwood stands, and a rich array of wildlife. Animal populations declined sharply during the civil war – many conservation programs are currently working to rebuild them.

Culinary highlights include rice, cassava (fufu), leafy greens and spicy meat dishes . The national dish “ Dumboy ” is traditionally prepared from pounded cassava.

Gold coins from Liberia – historical commemorative issues and numismatic relevance

Liberia is one of the African states that issued representative gold coins with political and historical references in the 1960s. The coins combine national identity, national symbolism and international minting quality – and are therefore increasingly valued in the collector market.

The focus is particularly on the commemorative editions for the 70th birthday of President William S. Tubman (1965) . They were minted in Switzerland and are characterized by fine workmanship, low market availability and outstanding levels of preservation in certified examples.
