Krugerrand

Krugerrand Coins

The Krugerrand is considered the coin that started modern gold coin collecting. It was first created on July 3, 1967 with the aim of marketing South African gold when the concept of a legal tender coin linked to the daily price of gold was introduced in South Africa.

The proof editions, just like the launch sets, the proof sets or the prestige sets are primarily aimed at premium investors or collectors. They have high demands, as they not only want to own a Krugerrand coin, but also strictly limited copies.

The world-famous portrait of Paul Kruger is depicted on the obverse of the Krugerrand gold coin. The mint was founded by Paul Kruger, President of South Africa from 1883 to 1902. The South African Mint then emerged from this mint. The country of issue is stamped on the edge of the coin in English and Afrikaans.

The reverse of the Krugerrand gold coin features a springbok motif with a stylized South African steppe landscape in the background. Likewise, the fine weight of the coin, the fineness and the precious metal are depicted on the face of the coin.

The coin has no face value stamped on it. The value is therefore always based on the current price of gold.

The 1 oz Krugerrand weighs 33.93 g. Of which 31.1 g fine gold and approx. 2.83 g copper.

The 1 oz coin has been around since 1967 and since 1980 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz versions have also been minted.
