South Africa Big Five 2019 – Lion – Series I – 1 oz PP Gold – NGC PF70 UCAM – First Day of Issue

Before you is the 2019 Lion coin from the first series of the prestigious “Big Five” collection, produced by the South African Mint in South Africa.

This rare specimen comes in an NGC holder and has been certified with the top grading PF70 UCAM (Ultra Cameo). Additionally, it was marked as “First Day of Issue” and handwritten signed by Managing Director Tumi Tsehlo.

The Big Five Lion gold coin is part of the second release in the Big Five series. For those who don’t know, the “Big Five” refers to five iconic wild animals – elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion and leopard. With a global limitation of only 500 pieces, this coin is particularly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts.

A unique feature of this series is the reverse design of the coin. It consists of two parts of an animal portrait. Placing two coins of this type side by side creates a full close-up portrait of one of the “Big Five” animals. A number of these coins would depict a pride of lions.

Obverse:

The face of the coin features a lion. Below are the inscriptions “SOUTH AFRICA”, “BIG FIVE” and the year of issue “2019”.

Reverse:

The reverse shows two parts of a lion’s face. Framed by the two halves of the portrait, the denomination “FIFTY RAND”, the weight “1 oz” and the clarity “Au 999.9” are arranged centrally.
