Background on Guamá:
Guamá was a Taíno chief who led a resistance against Spanish colonial rule in Cuba from 1522 until his death in 1532. His guerrilla tactics were based on surprise attacks and rapid retreat strategies to evade the technologically superior Spanish. Although the exact circumstances of his death are unclear, it is believed that he was murdered in his sleep by his own brother. A place in the Ciénaga de Zapata, which is now part of a national park and recreates traditional Taíno building methods, was named in his honor.
This gold coin combines historical significance, rare origin and the highest numismatic quality – an exclusive collector’s item from one of the most unusual minting contexts of modern times.
