History

Derbent is the southernmost city in Russia. The area is 70 square kilometers. Derbent is one of the oldest cities in Russia and the second largest city in Dagestan.

The city is located on a narrow isthmus between the western coast of the Caspian Sea and the foothills of the Great Caucasus on the Sukhodol River, 40 km southwest of the border with Azerbaijan. Since ancient times it has been of strategic importance, as it represents a convenient passage between Transcaucasia and the North Caucasus.
