On the subject of sambo
Sambo (abbreviation translated from Russian – Sambo= self-defense without weapons) is a Soviet and since 1966 an international sport and applied martial art, which was developed in the years 1920-1930 on the basis of Judo, Jiu-Jitsu and wrestling under the leadership of Vasily Oschepkov, Viktor Spiridonov and Anatoly Karlampiev.
After the recognition of Sambo by FILA in 1966 and its inclusion in the program of the World Wrestling Championships since 1973 (in the program of the World Wrestling Championships from 1977 and in the program of the Pan American Games from 1983), Sambo moved rapidly on the wave of an unprecedented international popularity in the mid-1970s towards its inclusion as an Olympic sport in the program of the Summer Olympic Games from 1980.
Boycott of the Olympic Games
However, as a result of the political difficulties caused by the boycott of the 1980 Olympics, sambo was downgraded to the international Olympic status of a demonstration sport, and its status as a demonstration sport was later revoked by the IOC (International Olympic Committee).
On July 20, 2021, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) recognized sambo as an Olympic sport for the first time. This decision was made at the IOC Session in Tokyo, Japan, on the eve of the 2020 Olympic Games.
